Abstract
Floridi's idea about Information Ethics (IE) is the main concern of this paper. According to Floridi, IE can be considering as the foundation of Computer Ethics (CE). In this approach he introduces some important concepts like Information Objects, Info-sphere and entropy. He builds up all his theory with these new concepts.
In this paper we will look at the Floridi's idea in a deeper way. We try to find inner interest in his theory and we find out that he connects IE with Environmental Ethics (EE) and wants to show that IE is the extension of EE in Information age. In this manner he tries to introduce Info-sphere instead of Bio-sphere. He tries also to clarify the concept of Information in an ethical environment. At this point we will show that Floridi's idea about Information concept is not a complete and consistence one. If we can replace it with a sophisticated definition we will able to build up a new approach in IE. As we will show we introduce two Information definitions. One is based on syntactic aspect of Information and other is based on semantic aspect of Information. We replace the semantic approach with syntactic approach and review all the Floridi's theory.
Floridi also define Information Society and introduce a new entity: "Informational Agent ". Here we see that how Floridi tries to find a foundation for IE and finds EE a good basis for IE. Finally he says that IE is a new ecological ethics for the Information Environment and this ethical concern should be extended from Bio-sphere to Info-sphere. We will show that this approach is not enough to copes with all ethical problems in the domain of Information Society. As we show the most important problems in IE are not reduce-able to old theories of EE and so on. The nature of Information regarding to our semantic definition has new emergent properties that must be consider in IE and CE.
One of the most important parts of Floridi's idea is the transfer from epistemological view to the ontological view. In this part, Floridi tries to combine Heidegger idea about "Dasein" with IE principles. He tries to put all Information Agents in the ethical environment. We will show that his attempts to put agents in ethical environment are very important but we offer a new criterion for selecting ethical agents. This is not only Information but also is the action and desire of the agent.
One of the other concepts that Floridi introduce in his theory about IE is a phenomenological one: "Level of Abstraction". Here we show that this conceptual analysis method is not enough appropriate tools to handle all difficulties in theory building in ethical domains.
Finally we will discuss about IE consequences in Floridi's idea. As he mentions IE determines what is morally right or wrong. We show that although IE offer foundations for CE but is not enough bases for moral decision making. One must consider other ethical concerns to able to decide.
There are other aspects of Floridi's idea in Information Ethics that we will show in details in our paper.
